About Polite Pup
I'm Mandy Vexler, CCDT, a Fairfield County, CT based dog trainer and behavior consultant.
When I was six years old on a family holiday in Portugal I found and secretly kept a flea infested, malnourished stray--feeding him, and keeping him warm in my bedroom at night. When my parents found him, bathed him, and explained that quarantine laws in the UK prevented us from taking him home. We drove around the countryside until we found him a loving home at a farm. I have since devoted my free time to numerous animal welfare projects, including adopting and rehoming many strays.
I founded Your Polite Pup to pursue my life-long passion--helping dogs and owners develop a true bond and enjoy a lifetime of companionship and fun. I completed The Master Class course through Catch Canine Trainers Academy, a highly respected comprehensive ten-phase program that covers obedience training and advanced behavior solutions, something I believe is key to a polite pup.

In-Home Training
Whether you want to work on basic obedience or to extinguish bad habits, your home is the ideal place for training. This is where your dog learns and misbehaves the majority of the time.
Dogs learn by association. At home, there are no distractions and they won't have to endure the stress of being sent away to a kennel for a period of time. In-home training sessions are the most productive and stress-free way to get maximum results.
Training your dog will also help you to bond. The more you train and spend time with him, the more he will understand you. And the more you play and interact with him the better understanding you will have of your pet. To get the best results I make training interesting and fun for both you and your dog.
Socialization Classes
The importance of puppy and dog socialization is crucial for a happy, healthy, polite pup.
Since I started working with dogs I've realized just how imperative it is for our best friends to experience the mental stimulation and physical exercise of free play. During socialization classes dogs learn the art of canine manners. These skills set them up for a lifetime of respectful and joyful interaction with other dogs. Canine manners include recognizing body language and learning how to politely greet other dogs.
Unfortunately, many dog-friendly places are unpredictable and unsafe, especially for impressionable young dogs. During the imprint phases of puppyhood, traumatic encounters with other dogs can lead to life-long social impairment. That's why I hold weekly classes to fulfill my clients' need for their pups to experience a controlled and safe outdoor environment where there is nothing but fun, learning, and making new friends. I get to know and understand each dog I train, which allows me to create bespoke sessions with dogs that are compatible in age, size and, most importantly, temperament.
If you struggle with a nipping puppy, puppy socialization teaches bite inhibition; if your dog is destructive in the house or garden, socialization classes alleviate the boredom that can cause these behaviors. The best thing is that these sessions provide the kind of exercise a dog will only get when running free with other dogs--and an exhausted pup is a polite pup!
Behavior Consultation
Dogs were initially bred to work. Whether it be for hunting, herding, or guarding, they had a job to do. Unfortunately in today's busy world, many dogs are left alone for hours at a time in their crate or confined to an allocated area. This is so unhealthy for them. It creates a lonely, bored and distressed animal. The consequence is annoying behavior, such as barking excessively, chewing, and digging--but most importantly it can damage your relationship.
Every dog has it’s own characteristics, strengths, weaknesses, and personality—just like us humans. But, unlike humans, dogs understand our body language and actions in ways we may not realize. I can identify the barriers that are holding your dog's behavior back. I'll teach you simple ways to establish a healthy relationship with your dog and fulfill his needs so he feels confident, calm and content.
